How to read the labels on this page
So I mark where each statement comes from, because they don't all carry the same weight. A platform rule is something Etsy's own policy pages or its reports to the US government say. A seller report is one seller, or a few sellers, describing their own shop, which I can't verify. Opinion is a reviewer's view, including mine. A law is a government rule. This page doesn't give tax advice. Rules on taxes and licenses differ by state, so your state's tax agency or an accountant can confirm what applies where you live.
What does it cost to sell on Etsy?
Now Etsy doesn't charge a monthly plan price. Basically, you pay when you list an item, when it sells and when the card payment is processed. A payment processor is the company that handles the card payment for you. On Etsy that is Etsy Payments.
These are platform rules from Etsy's fees and payments policy (last updated October 5, 2026) and Etsy Payments policy (last updated July 31, 2026), checked October 16, 2026, for a shop in the United States, in US dollars.
| Etsy charge | Amount, checked October 16, 2026 | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 per listing | Each listing, which expires after four months. A listing with several of the same item in stock renews for $0.20 each time one sells. |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | The item price plus shipping and gift wrap. |
| Payment processing with Etsy Payments | 3% + $0.25 | The whole order, including shipping and tax, for each order. If you list in a different currency from your bank account, Etsy adds 2.5% to convert it. |
| Offsite Ads | 15% of an order that came from one of these ads, or 12% once a shop reaches $10,000 in sales over 365 days | Orders that come from Etsy's ads on other websites. The charge is capped at $100 per order. Below $10,000 a shop can turn Offsite Ads off. At $10,000 or more, the shop is in for the life of the shop. My Offsite Ads guide goes through it. |
| Etsy Plus | $10 a month | An optional subscription. A shop doesn't need it to sell. |
I break each of these down in my Etsy fees explained guide.
What is Etsy's one-time set-up fee?
Etsy's fee policy says that while you open your shop, after you confirm the charge, Etsy starts a pending charge on your card. It says the one-time set-up fee can't be refunded once it's paid. It also says Etsy can change the fee, and can waive it during promotions.
Etsy's fee policy doesn't print the amount, checked October 16, 2026. A February 2026 walkthrough video showed $29 on the billing screen. I show that screen in my Shopify vs Etsy guide. Keep in mind that this amount is from one video, and Etsy can change it. I keep the set-up fee out of the fee math below, because you pay the set-up fee once.
And the listing fees can't be refunded either. Etsy's Seller Policy (last updated October 5, 2026) says that if Etsy removes your listings or suspends your account, you still owe any fees that are outstanding.
What do Etsy's fees come to at $1,000, $3,000 and $5,000 a month?
Now here is the fee math, with my assumptions written out so you can redo it with your own numbers. I show two examples, because a $50 handmade item and a $10 digital file come out very differently.
- Shop and country: A US shop, US shoppers, US dollars.
- Average order: $50 for the first table and $10 for the second table. Shipping is included in that price and there is no sales tax. Both amounts are my assumptions, not statistics.
- Number of orders: For $50 orders, 20 orders for $1,000, 60 for $3,000 and 100 for $5,000. For $10 orders, 100 orders for $1,000, 300 for $3,000 and 500 for $5,000.
- Payment method: Every order paid by card through Etsy Payments at 3% + $0.25.
- Listing fee: One $0.20 listing fee for each order, because each sold item needs one new listing or one renewal.
- Left out: The one-time set-up fee, Offsite Ads, Etsy Ads, Etsy Plus, the cost of making your product, shipping labels, your time and income taxes.
The totals below were calculated with Etsy's prices checked October 16, 2026. Each total is the transaction fee (6.5% of sales), plus the processing fee (3% of sales plus $0.25 per order), plus the listing fees ($0.20 per order).
A handmade or art print item at $50 an order:
| Monthly sales | Calculation | Total Etsy fees |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 (20 orders) | (0.065 x 1,000) + (0.03 x 1,000 + 0.25 x 20) + (0.20 x 20) = 65 + 35 + 4 | $104 (10.4% of sales) |
| $3,000 (60 orders) | (0.065 x 3,000) + (0.03 x 3,000 + 0.25 x 60) + (0.20 x 60) = 195 + 105 + 12 | $312 (10.4%) |
| $5,000 (100 orders) | (0.065 x 5,000) + (0.03 x 5,000 + 0.25 x 100) + (0.20 x 100) = 325 + 175 + 20 | $520 (10.4%) |
A digital download at $10 an order:
| Monthly sales | Calculation | Total Etsy fees |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 (100 orders) | (0.065 x 1,000) + (0.03 x 1,000 + 0.25 x 100) + (0.20 x 100) = 65 + 55 + 20 | $140 (14% of sales) |
| $3,000 (300 orders) | (0.065 x 3,000) + (0.03 x 3,000 + 0.25 x 300) + (0.20 x 300) = 195 + 165 + 60 | $420 (14%) |
| $5,000 (500 orders) | (0.065 x 5,000) + (0.03 x 5,000 + 0.25 x 500) + (0.20 x 500) = 325 + 275 + 100 | $700 (14%) |
So the flat 25 cents and the flat 20 cents on every order take the biggest share of a cheap file's price. At $5 an order, Etsy's fees come to $0.925 per order, which is 18.5% of the sale. At $20 an order they come to $2.35, or 11.75%. A digital file has no shipping and no product cost, so Etsy's fees and the payment processing are nearly your whole cost on each sale.
If Etsy's Offsite Ads bring an order, add 15% of that order, or 12% once your shop reaches $10,000 in 365 days. Etsy Ads are Etsy's paid ads inside Etsy, and you pay each time a shopper clicks one of your ads. Etsy Ads are optional.
For comparison, Shopify's Basic plan paid yearly costs $29 a month in the US, plus 2.9% + 30 cents per order with Shopify Payments, checked October 15, 2026. With $10 orders and no paid apps, that comes to $88 at $1,000 a month ($29 + $29 + $30), $206 at $3,000 and $324 at $5,000. Paid monthly, Shopify's Basic plan is $39, so add $10 to each total. Shopify's fees are lower on these numbers. But keep in mind that Shopify doesn't bring shoppers to your store, and Etsy brings shoppers to your listings. I go through the $50 orders side by side in my Etsy fees vs Shopify fees guide.
How big is Etsy, and how many people sell there?
Now Etsy is a public company, so it reports numbers to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, the government agency that oversees public companies. These are platform figures. They are Etsy's own, and Etsy says it hasn't had a third party verify them.
An active seller is, in Etsy's words, a seller with a charge or a sale in the last 12 months. An active buyer is a buyer who made at least one purchase in the last 12 months. GMS is gross merchandise sales, which means the dollar value of items sold. It leaves out shipping fees and subtracts refunds. All the figures below are for the Etsy marketplace only, not for Etsy's other businesses.
| Measure | Figure | Period | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Active sellers | 5.706 million, up 5.9% from 5.388 million a year earlier | As of June 30, 2026 | Etsy's Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
| Active sellers | 5.6 million | As of December 31, 2025, and December 31, 2024 | Etsy's 2025 Form 10-K and 2024 Form 10-K |
| Active buyers | 86.969 million, down 0.4% from 87.340 million a year earlier | As of June 30, 2026 | Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
| Active buyers | 86.5 million, and 89.6 million | As of December 31, 2025, and December 31, 2024 | The 2025 and 2024 Forms 10-K |
| GMS, full year | $10,460.7 million, and about $10.9 billion | Calendar year 2025, and calendar year 2024 | The 2025 and 2024 Forms 10-K |
| GMS, one quarter | $2,582.9 million, up 7.5% from a year earlier | Quarter ended June 30, 2026 | Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, and Etsy's Q2 2026 shareholder letter |
So here is my reading of those numbers, and that part is opinion. Etsy had 5.6 million active sellers at the end of both 2024 and 2025, and 5.7 million in June 2026. Active buyers went from 89.6 million at the end of 2024 to about 87 million in June 2026. Total sales in 2025 were lower than in 2024, and sales in the quarter ended June 30, 2026 were higher than a year earlier. Etsy isn't collapsing, and it isn't booming.
Etsy's own 2025 Form 10-K says active buyers, and what each buyer spends over a 12 month stretch, have gone down year over year. It says Etsy needs to build momentum with active buyers to grow. These are the latest figures Etsy had published as of October 16, 2026.
Who are the people selling on Etsy?
Etsy's 2025 Form 10-K reports a seller survey that Etsy commissioned from the research company Ipsos. The survey ran online from October 1 to 16, 2024. It asked randomly selected sellers with active shops in the US, UK, Germany, France, Canada and Australia, and 2,402 answered. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.1%, which means each answer could be off by about 3 points either way.
- 89% said they run a business of one person, and 97% said they run it from home.
- 29% said their creative business, on Etsy and off Etsy, is their sole occupation.
- 38% said they use the income to cover household expenses like bills, rent and food.
- 59% said Etsy was the first place they ever sold, and 51% said they sell in more than one place.
So most Etsy sellers are one-person home businesses, and fewer than a third do it as their only job. Keep in mind that Etsy paid for the survey, and the survey reports no income figure. It tells you who sells, not how much they make.
What do Etsy sellers actually complain about?
Now I split these into what Etsy itself documents and what sellers report. A count of how many sellers have a problem isn't published for any of these complaints, so none of the reports below show how often a problem happens. People post when they have a problem.
What does Etsy actually allow you to sell?
This is a platform rule. Etsy's Creativity Standards (last updated June 10, 2025) say every item must include a human touch, in one of four ways.
- Made by a seller: Physical items you make from your own original design, in your own shop or home. You can make them by hand or with tools like a laser printer, a 3D printer, a CNC machine or a Cricut. Assembling a flat-pack kit or a Lego set doesn't count as making.
- Designed by a seller: Your original designs, printed or produced by a partner company, or sold as a digital download. You have to say who the production partner is and where the item ships from. A bundle or scan of someone else's work isn't allowed, and neither are AI prompt bundles, which are collections of the text instructions people type into AI tools.
- Handpicked by a seller: Vintage items that are at least 20 years old, items from nature and themed gift baskets.
- Sourced by a seller: Craft supplies, party supplies, and items a production partner personalizes for a buyer. Blank ready-to-use items, like blank t-shirts or tumblers, and generic resold goods aren't allowed.
Etsy's Seller Policy adds that dropshipping, where a supplier ships the item straight to your shopper, isn't allowed. Reselling isn't allowed either, with a few exceptions such as craft supplies. It also says you need your own photos, with limited exceptions, and that you have to disclose an item made with AI in the listing. Etsy's standards page is dated June 10, 2025, and no Etsy page shows a change to the handmade rules in 2026.
Print on demand means a company prints and ships your design when someone orders it. Etsy allows print on demand as "designed by a seller," as long as you name the production partner. Blank items you resell aren't allowed.
What about AI-made listings?
Etsy's seller handbook article on AI creations (dated July 9, 2024) says Etsy decided to keep allowing sellers to use AI tools with their own original prompts to create the artwork they sell. A prompt is the text instruction you type into an AI tool. Sellers must say in the listing description if an item was made with AI. Etsy says it will look at the rule again from time to time. That is a platform rule.
Here are the seller reports, and keep in mind that each one comes from a small number of sellers.
- A July 21, 2026 WIRED article quotes two sellers. Emily Olson, an artist in Boulder, Colorado, says her sales fell 30% in 2022 and 50% the next year. She says she moved to Shopify, where sales have also been disappointing. A UK illustrator who has sold on Etsy for ten years says his sales dropped 98% in the past year.
- The same WIRED article quotes James Ossman, Etsy's vice president of customer operations. He says enforcing Etsy's AI and honesty standards is complex, and that Etsy has a lot more work to do. The article gives no count of AI listings.
- In a September 2026 NBC News video (embedded below), Emily Olson, the same watercolor artist, says AI-made listings hurt her visibility. NBC quotes an Etsy statement that sellers may use AI as a tool, but not to deceive buyers, misrepresent an item or copy other people's work. Etsy's statement adds that it keeps working on finding and removing listings that don't belong.
No survey or data set counts AI listings on Etsy or counts sellers who have left. Blog posts with big numbers on this don't name a source, so this page doesn't print them.

This Etsy listing, shown as NBC's example, is a digital download that says in its title and description that it is AI-generated. The price and sale date are from the video, published September 25, 2026, so the price may have changed. Seller names are blurred. Screen from NBC News's video.
Why do sellers say their sales and visibility dropped?
Etsy doesn't publish how its search ranks listings, and the rules for ranking change. In its Q2 2026 shareholder letter, Etsy says it is changing its approach to quality, so it shows more than just what has been most popular in the past. Etsy also says it is starting work to change its Star Seller program. A Star Seller is an Etsy badge for shops that meet Etsy's service standards.
Two ranking rules are written down. Etsy's seller handbook article on shipping prices in search (dated October 3, 2024) says that from October 1, 2024, US listings with domestic shipping under $6 are prioritized in search. Digital listings are excluded. And Etsy's Seller Policy says Etsy can limit the visibility of your account or listings over service problems, and that a rapid jump in orders can lower visibility.
For a seller report, here is one thread on Etsy's own seller forum, posted in November 2025, titled "Any advice for my Shop? Big sales drop." The thread has 18 comments. Counting the person who posted, 8 people say they had a large drop in views or sales starting around September 2025. Two or three comments blame the economy. The rest give tips. That is one thread, so it can't tell you whether sales dropped across Etsy.

This Etsy search for pet portraits shows listings with Handmade labels, some labeled Ad, and prices. The prices are from the video, published September 25, 2026. Seller names are blurred. Screen from NBC News's video.
What do sellers say about digital downloads?
Etsy's filings don't say anything specific about digital downloads, so there is no Etsy data on how crowded that category is. What exists is seller opinion. In a May 2026 video from Online With Tash (embedded below), a seller of digital downloads says Etsy is harder now than when she started. She points to more products and higher customer expectations. In a January 2026 video, the UK handmade seller Kim Bliss lists crowding, AI images, copycats and automated systems as downsides. She still says yes to someone starting, and she mentions that her own first sale took six months. That is her experience, not a rule.
One seller also reports theft. In her January 2025 video (embedded below), Emily Olson says her high resolution files were printed on mugs sold elsewhere and given away on a wallpaper site. So she took her digital listings down. That is one seller's account.
Does Etsy hold sellers' money or suspend shops?
A payment account reserve is money Etsy holds back from your sales for a while. Here is what Etsy's help page on reserves says, checked October 16, 2026. These are platform rules.
- When a reserve applies, a percentage of the money from each new sale of a physical item is held.
- The reasons listed include a sudden sharp increase in orders or refunds, missing tracking, late shipping and "You've made your first sale on Etsy."
- Sales of digital items are not held in reserve.
- Adding valid tracking that shows the package in transit releases the money held for that order. A Star Seller doesn't get a reserve.
Etsy's Seller Policy says Etsy may limit visibility, put restrictions or reserves on your payments account, or suspend your account. The reasons it gives are unusual order activity, missed customer service standards, or a risk of disputes, fraud or counterfeiting. It says Etsy generally tells you, unless you've repeatedly broken the terms or Etsy has legal reasons not to. It also says Etsy may suspend accounts it decides are related to yours. I explain how fast Etsy pays new sellers in my Shopify vs Etsy guide.
In Etsy's Q2 2026 Form 10-Q, Etsy says its fraud tools carry risks from both catching too little and catching too much. Etsy also says it may use more holds on payouts, even though those holds may make Etsy less appealing to sellers. So Etsy itself says holds can be wrong.
For seller reports, a search of Etsy's seller forum on October 16, 2026 for "shop suspended" showed posts from 2022 to 2025. One example is a December 2022 post from a new seller suspended over a tax ID problem, who said 75% of her money was held back. The forum was rebuilt in October 2025, so 2026 posts can't be counted from its search. No rate of suspensions is published.
Have Etsy's fees gone up?
Etsy's 2025 Form 10-K says Etsy's advertising revenue rose $62.2 million in 2025, largely from a higher average price per click on Etsy Ads. It also says set-up fee revenue rose $18.4 million. And it says the number of active sellers fell in 2025 and then held steady from the second quarter. Etsy calls that the intended effect of the set-up fee it introduced in 2024. Etsy says that fee was designed to encourage a higher standard of seller commitment.
So my reading is that the set-up fee was meant to thin out less committed sellers, and Etsy Ads, which are optional, cost more per click. As for the transaction fee, seller Emily Olson says in her January 2025 video that it went from 5% to 6.5% in 2022. That is a seller's statement, and Etsy's fee page shows 6.5% today.
Do people make money on Etsy?
So some sellers do earn money on Etsy. But Etsy doesn't publish what a typical seller earns, and no source with a stated method does. A source with a stated method says who was asked, how many, and how.
- Etsy's filings give total sales for the whole marketplace and a count of active sellers. The sales total includes shops that sell a lot and shops that sold very little, so no per-seller income can be read from it.
- Etsy's 2024 seller survey reports who sells and why, not what they earn.
- Seller videos and articles describe one seller's own shop, in the seller's own words. Some say Etsy still works for them and some say it stopped working.
Basically, Etsy gives you the shoppers and the tools, and what you make depends on your product, your prices, your costs and how easily shoppers find your listings. The fees above are the part I can show you in numbers.
Who is Etsy a good fit for, and who should pick something else?
Now I'd rather tell you straight where Etsy fits and where it doesn't. The fit part is opinion. The rules and prices come from Etsy's policy pages, checked October 16, 2026.
Etsy tends to fit if:
- You make, design or collect what you sell, and you have no audience yet. Etsy has no monthly fee, so a slow month costs you listing fees. Etsy's Q2 2026 shareholder letter describes handmade as something Etsy wants to lean into.
- You sell personalized items, vintage items, craft supplies, wedding or party items, or art prints where you can show the real work.
- You want a low-cost way to find out whether people want your product before you pay for your own store. Keep in mind you still pay the one-time set-up fee to open the shop.
- You sell digital downloads of your own original designs. Etsy allows them as "designed by a seller," digital sales aren't held in reserve, and digital listings aren't covered by the shipping price rule. Expect plenty of competition.
Something else may fit better if:
| If this describes you | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You already have followers or an email list. | Shopify | On Etsy you pay 6.5% plus 3% + $0.25 per order plus the listing fee, so about 9.5% + 45 cents on each order, for sales you brought yourself. Etsy's Seller Policy also says you can't add buyers to your marketing list or move purchases off Etsy. See my Shopify vs Etsy guide and my Is Shopify worth it guide. Shopify's Basic plan in the US is $29 a month paid yearly or $39 paid monthly, checked October 15, 2026. |
| You sell resold, dropshipped or blank products. | Amazon or Shopify | Etsy's Creativity Standards and Seller Policy don't allow those items, apart from a few cases such as craft supplies. See my guide to starting on Amazon and my Shopify vs Amazon FBA guide. |
| You make handmade goods and want to compare marketplaces. | Amazon Handmade | I compare the two in my Etsy vs Amazon Handmade guide. |
| You plan to sell a few cheap digital files and can't spare the time to stand out. | Your plan for standing out, before you pay the set-up fee | At $5 to $10 an order, Etsy's fees take 14% to 18.5% of each sale in the math above, and sellers report heavy competition in this category. |
| You can't afford a hold on money from your first physical sales. | Another platform, or some savings set aside first | Etsy's help page says a reserve can start with your first sale of a physical item. |
| You need a person to answer every problem. | Selling in more than one place, not only on Etsy | Etsy itself says its enforcement can be wrong by catching too little or too much. And seller Emily Olson reports three listings removed with vague replies from support. |
But otherwise, if you make what you sell and you have no audience yet, Etsy is a reasonable place to test your idea. I cover the opening steps in my guide to starting an Etsy shop.
Videos worth watching about whether Etsy is worth it
And if you want to see more, here are three videos. You can play each one right here on the page, and YouTube's usual controls work, including skipping ahead, changing the speed and going full screen. Under each video is a short summary so you can decide if it's worth your time.
A short news report on sellers who say AI-made listings cut their visibility on Etsy.
- The seller: Emily Olson, a watercolor artist who sold on Etsy for seven years, says AI listings cut her visibility. Other creators on social media say the same.
- The screens: At about 0:36 the video shows an Etsy search for pet portraits. At about 1:26 it shows a digital download listing that says it's AI-generated.
- Other views: A competing marketplace says it bans AI products, and some shoppers say they don't mind. NBC notes Etsy's gross profit, the money Etsy keeps after its direct costs, has risen each year since 2023, and NBC shows Etsy's written statement.
- Worth knowing: These are stories from a few people plus one company statement, not measurements.
One watercolor artist explains in her own words why she stopped selling on Etsy. The video is from January 2025, so it is older than the other two videos here.
- Her story: She started in 2018 with watercolor nursery and pet prints, and says her sales fell from 2023.
- Her reasons: She lists higher fees, stolen digital files, AI-made listings in her niche, and three listings removed under the handmade rules with vague replies from support.
- Her conclusion: She says Etsy was no longer worth it to her and moved to selling on her own site.
- Worth knowing: She also sells a paid course and says she doesn't depend on art for her main income. This is one seller's account.
A balanced but upbeat look at selling digital downloads on Etsy from a seller of digital products.
- The downsides: She says Etsy is harder now than when she started, with many more products, and that AI makes products easier to create.
- The expectations: She says customers expect more, and that even a four star review can hurt. She says selling digital products isn't passive to start.
- Her view: She still thinks Etsy can be worth it if you treat it as a long-term asset.
- Worth knowing: She mentions a referral code, so the video is partly promotional. This page doesn't print or link the referral code.
Buddy's take
So ultimately, Etsy is worth trying if you make or design what you sell and you have no audience yet. Think of the fees as the cost of finding out whether anyone wants your product. Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, 6.5% of the sale plus shipping, and about 3% + 25 cents in processing, for a US shop, checked October 16, 2026.
But for me personally, I'd look elsewhere if you already have your own followers or you sell resold or dropshipped items. I'd also think twice if your whole plan is cheap digital files with no way to stand out.
And if you go ahead, read Etsy's Creativity Standards and fee policy first, and keep the one-time set-up fee out of your monthly math.
